Winter holidays in the Old Town 2026
The winter holidays are approaching, and if you are looking for the perfect combination of coziness, history and activities for the whole family, then Den Gamle By in Aarhus is the right place.
From February 7th to 22nd, 2026, you can experience a time when the stories come to life, and where you can get your hands on the old crafts yourself.
Below you will find an overview of what you can look forward to during this winter holiday.
Activities and workshops for children
When you visit Renæssancegården, you enter a center for creativity and immersion. Here you can purchase access to the three primary children's activities for 50 DKK per child.
Lantern workshop
You can build your very own fairy lantern to light up the dark winter hours. It's a fun activity where you can take your own luminous work of art home afterwards. Times: February 7th to 15th: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. February 16th to 22nd: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Make your own King of Denmark candies
Have you ever wondered why the classic candy is called the King of Denmark? While you listen to the exciting story, you can help make the red treats yourself.
Please note that there is only room for 10 children per group, so arrive early. Times: February 7th to 15th (weekdays): 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. February 16th to 22nd (all days): 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Winter's Tale about the Lantern Man
Let yourself be drawn into the darkness and mystery as the room fills with the story of the Lamp Man. It is an experience that appeals to the imagination of both children and adults. Times: February 7 to 15: 12:00 to 15:00. February 16 to 22: 12:00 to 13:30.
Food and comfort in a historic setting
A winter day in Aarhus naturally also calls for something good for the palate. The Old Town offers unique dining experiences that you won't find anywhere else in the city.
Lunch in 1700th century style
At Winekes Kælder you can enjoy a lunch inspired by the cuisine of the 1700th century. The room is lit only by candles, creating a very special atmosphere that takes you straight back in time.
The hunt for the city's best Shrove Tuesday buns
Winter holidays and Shrove Tuesday buns are inextricably linked. You can taste the classic versions, as they were made in the old days, at Konditoriet Café Bonnich, Restaurant Gæstgivergården or in Winekes Kælder.
Explore underground
If you need to warm up, you can take an impressive journey through time below the surface. In the 800 square meter underground universe, you can follow the development of Danish cities over 1200 years, from the Viking Age to the present day. It's a modern and interactive way to experience history that you shouldn't miss.
