Denmark's largest oak park and the rich wildlife
When you walk along the paths, you are actually moving around Denmark's largest oak park. The decision to plant the many oak trees was originally made for economic reasons, but today the massive tree crowns contribute to the park's unique robustness and beauty. By the mirror-like lakes you can experience old trees whose branches reach all the way down to the water's surface, where ducks and coots swim freely. It is a favorite place for those who want to enjoy the silence of nature in the middle of the vibrant university environment.
Architectural innovation and green facades
Aarhus University is world-renowned for its visionary design created by architect CF Møller. The facades are adorned with climbing green vines, often extending all the way up to the upper floors. This vibrant, green carpet creates a dynamic contrast to the yellow bricks and makes the campus an architectural gem. The buildings not only house dormitories with fantastic views, but are also the setting for top international research, which has been honored with two Nobel Prizes over the years.
Historical anecdotes: From grazing sheep to angry rams
The history of the park holds many entertaining stories. Did you know that in 1934, 20 sheep were used to keep the grass down? However, they became a source of great disruption, as their bleating often interrupted classes. The most famous story is about an angry ram who punched his own reflection in one of the windows, shattering the glass. Today, the sheep have been replaced by students, who use the park as an inspiring environment for both reading and social breaks.
The center of traditions: the Aula and the Amphitheater
Central to the campus is the university auditorium, adorned with a beautiful sundial that symbolizes the eternal pursuit of knowledge. Right next to it is the historic amphitheater from 1949, which seats 3000 spectators. For decades, this venue has been an important gathering place for everything from formal academic ceremonies to informal study groups enjoying the architectural setting under the open sky.
The sailing race: Northern Europe's largest student event
Every year, the University Park forms the setting for the legendary Sailing, which has been one of the city’s biggest traditions since 1991. The event attracts up to 30.000 spectators and is the largest student-run event in Northern Europe. Here, 12 teams compete in an intense discipline where they have to cross the lake in kayaks, perform the classic “around the bottle” maneuver and fight for the prestigious trophy, the Golden Stream. It is a day when the park explodes with creative energy and community across all fields of study.
