Teatret Svalegangen: Contemporary theatre with something on its heart

In the middle of Aarhus is Teatret Svalegangen, which for decades has been known for performing arts that take their point of departure in the topics and questions that characterize our time. Performances with current themes

Teatret Svalegangen is known for bringing current issues to the forefront of debate through performing arts. The performances often revolve around identity, relationships and the challenges that characterise our society right now. These can be stories about gender and equality, the lives of young people, midlife crises, political movements or existential questions about illness, loss and the end of life.

In recent seasons, the theatre has performed performances such as Grab Them by the Pussy, Mæt af dage and Ole Nye Auto. What they have in common is that they not only entertain, but also invite the audience to reflect and discuss, long after the performance has ended.

United Change brings performing arts into the urban space

Teatret Svalegangen is also an active part of Aarhus outside the theatre. During Aarhus Festuge, the theatre was behind United Change, where the building's facade forms the setting for spectacular performances with light, aerial acrobatics and performing arts.

The project is based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and uses art and experiences to create dialogue about some of the challenges the world faces. With initiatives such as Streets of Change, the theatre also invites young people to put their thoughts about the future into words and images through artistic projects.

From a small theater to a significant stage in Aarhus

Teatret Svalegangen was founded in 1963 by three actors from Aarhus Teater, who wanted a stage for the stories and drama they could not perform elsewhere. The first performances were performed in a former warehouse in Vestergade with space for just 55 audiences, and the curtain did not rise until late in the evening, when the working day at Aarhus Teater was over.

The name Svalegangen comes from the external swallow passage that the audience used to enter the performances. Since 1982, the theatre has been based in the former casino building in Rosenkrantzgade, where it continues to be known for new Danish drama and performances that are based on the times we live in.
