There is something special about Radio go!FM Live that is hard to explain if you haven't been there yourself.

Maybe it's the combination of concerts, summer weather and thousands of people in good spirits. Maybe it's just become an annual tradition for many.

I've been there 7 times now. The first time was when the stage was still smaller, and before the concert area grew to what it is today. Yet there's one thing that never really changes. People are genuinely happy.

When the doors opened at 4:00 PM, people began to quietly stream in through the gates. Sunglasses were on, cold drinks were brought out, and preparations were being made all around the lawn for a long summer evening. At 6:00 PM, Bathsheba took the stage, and from there the evening rolled on without any major breaks until Gobs closed the party four hours later.

An evening with room for everyone

It is no coincidence that Radio go!FM Live is located in Tivoli Friheden.

The park gives the event something that a traditional concert venue cannot. It's hard to take yourself too seriously in a place where there are concerts, roller coasters, and candy floss within a few minutes' walk.

Between the artists, you could take a ride on the rides, buy a tour band or just walk around the park. You don't have to stand in front of the stage the whole evening to get something out of the experience. There is room for breaks, for spontaneous detours and to experience the evening in your own way.

In front of the stage, the most dedicated had secured a place in the Inner Circle. Here I met two women who were attending for the fifth time. This time they had chosen to buy access to the area closest to the stage. They love concerts, they said, and they love the atmosphere at Radio go!FM Live. For them, it is a party where everyone can join in.

Further back, families and groups of friends sat on the grass. Some danced in front of the stage, while others enjoyed the music from blankets and folding chairs. Companies had rented out the towers around the square, making the evening a summer outing with a view of the entire concert area.

The good thing about Radio go!FM Live is that no one has to experience it the same way.

And you could see it in the audience. There were younger friends on a trip, families with children and earplugs, colleagues on a summer outing, and guests who had been there almost as long as the event itself. A mix of people who might not normally stand side by side, but who shared the same lawn this evening.

They took the train from Funen

One of the best moments of the evening didn't come from the stage. Two young guys from Funen had discovered the event on Facebook, called six friends and jumped on the train to Aarhus.

Along the way, they had an idea. They wanted to collect autographs. Not from the artists, but from the audience.

When we met them, they had already collected almost 50 signatures on their postcard. Among them was a former AGF player. They walked around with big smiles and stopped people they had never met before.

It was hard not to be in a good mood. And there was no doubt that they had already decided to come again next year.

A little later I got into a conversation with Alexander from Føtex in Aarhus. He was going with his colleagues for the third time.

He was very honest when he said that it's not the music that draws him back every year, but the community.

Some of the people he met at the event several years ago have become personal friends today. Since then, they have been together at a Metallica concert, among other things.

Danish music that brings the lawn together

The program featured Bathsheba, Omar, Mille, Johnson, Saint Clara and Gobs.

In front of the stage, people sang along to choruses that most people already knew. Some stood right up against the fence, while others sat further back in the grass with their friends around them. But no matter where you were in the square, it was clear that the audience knew the songs.

That is perhaps also the advantage of a program that consists exclusively of Danish artists. A kind of common frame of reference is created.

Songs you've heard on the radio on your way to work. Lyrics you already know by heart. Choruses that thousands of people can sing along to at the same time. It just creates something special.

More than just a concert

Radio go!FM Live would not be possible without the companies that choose to support the event.

GF Forsikring has been involved since the beginning, and according to Mia Vestergaard, members start asking for tickets every year long before the event approaches. For many, it has become a permanent tradition in the summer calendar.

As the last notes died away from the stage, people began to quietly move towards the exit.

Some with hoarse voices and others with tired legs. And a couple of guys from Funen with a postcard full of autographs from people they had never met before.
