Have an authentic Easter holiday in the Old Town
When spring hits Aarhus, there's no more beautiful place to feel history than in the Old Town. From March 28 to April 6, 2026, you can step right into Easter traditions that span centuries.
Here you will get an overview of what you absolutely must experience if you want to get the most out of your Easter holiday.
Go in search of the history of Easter
For those of you with children, the Easter hunt is an absolute must. It's not just a walk through the streets of the Old Town, but a journey through time where you follow the Easter egg back to its origin.
Easter hunt in the neighborhoods
You can go hunting for Easter egg stamps around the city. When you've found them all, you can end up in the tent at the Festpladsen, where you can decorate your own egg.
Dye eggs with nature's colors
At Købmandsgården you can help the kitchen maid dye eggs. Here you use everything from onion skins to beetroot and mash, just like they did in the old days.
Find the Easter Bunny's hiding place
Take a walk past Havbogade in the 1927 district. Here, the Easter Bunny has been playing in the garden, and in the kitchen you can give the housewife a hand decorating the finest Easter eggs.
The taste of Easter: From nikålsoppe to goose breast
You can't say Easter without saying good food. Den Gamle By masters the discipline of combining history with good taste.
The big Easter lunch
If you want to treat yourself, book a table at Gæstgivergården. They serve an Easter lunch inspired by historical cookbooks. You can sample classics like nikålsuppe and sun-dried eggs, dishes you rarely find on the menu elsewhere in Aarhus.
Sweet temptations
If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss out on a visit to the pastry chef. Here you will find:
- Handmade Easter eggs.
- Classic medals.
- The indispensable goose breast.
Spring mood and a ride in a privateer's carriage
As you move through the city, you will feel how spring has moved in. At the florist and in the Bernstorff Commercial Garden you can buy tulips, daffodils and historic seed bags to take home for your own garden.
Before you head home, treat yourself and your family to a ride in the pirate wagon. It's the ultimate way to see the beautiful, Easter-decorated houses and shop windows.
Price for pirate wagon: 40 DKK per child / 50 DKK per adult.
Practical info for your trip
