A green breathing space with room for both history and everyday life
Nordre Kirkegård is located in the middle of Trøjborg and is used every day by locals, students and visitors alike. Many come for a walk among the old trees, while others sit on the grass or follow the paths through one of Aarhus' most atmospheric green areas.

A park for you and the city
Nordre Kirkegård is today as much a park as a cemetery. The wide paths, large lawns and old trees make the area a popular place for a walk or a quiet break in the middle of the city.
Many people use the area as a shortcut through Trøjborg, while others settle on the grass or follow the small paths between the graves and the flowering bushes.
The old tombstones
Around the cemetery you will find around 450 tombstones worthy of preservation, which tell the story of some of the people who have left their mark on Aarhus.
Members of the Salling family, freedom fighters from World War II, the author Thora Visby-Petersen and city engineer Peter Holm are buried here, among others. The graves, sculptures and old monuments make the area a living piece of cultural history.
The forest cemetery and the nature of the future
Nordre Kirkegård is undergoing a major development, where parts of the area are gradually being transformed into a forest cemetery. Here, trees, wild flowers and natural vegetation are given a larger space, while the history of the area is preserved.
The project is expected to be completed around 2030, but already today you can experience the new green areas and the more open character that the development has given the cemetery.
Northern Cemetery all year round
Nordre Kirkegård changes character throughout the year. In spring, cherry trees and magnolias bloom, while summer provides shade under the old tree crowns. Autumn colors the avenues in yellow and red hues, and in winter, the bare trees and historic graves give the area a very special look.
It is one of the parks in Aarhus that is worth visiting several times during the year.

Parking at the park
The cemetery is in the center of Aarhus and therefore you must find a parking space in the surrounding streets.
Public toilets
There are no public toilets in the cemetery.
Public transport
Bus 1A stops at Kirkegårdsvej, while bus 17 and the Light Rail stop at Østbanetorvet.
