Louis Marcussen: The Artist and the Rebel Ovartaci
The core of the museum is the story of Louis Marcussen, who became known as Ovartaci. After a fateful trip to Argentina, he was forcibly admitted to the hospital in Risskov, where he ended up spending more than 50 years as a patient. Ovartaci refused to let the system define his personality and instead created his own world through art, figures and paintings. His works are characterized by his belief in reincarnation and his ability to create art from everything from toothpaste tubes to tin foil, which makes his production a necessary way of life rather than just exhibition objects.
Authentic clues from the psychiatric hospital in Risskov
Museum Ovartaci is built with a strong connection to its origins, as several of the rooms contain original building parts from the now demolished hospital in Risskov. Windows and lights have been recreated with a precision that makes history physically tangible for visitors. This authentic setting contains both the harsh tales of past treatment methods and the small glimpses of hope and resistance that have taken place behind the hospital walls over time.
The open workshop: The person before the diagnosis
In addition to the historical exhibitions, the museum houses an active workshop where people with a psychiatric background can express their creativity in a disease-neutral space. There are no boxes or diagnoses here, but only space for the creative person. It is a place for conversations that arise through the hands, and the workshop serves as living proof that art has the power to change and heal us from within.
