Experience the Marselisborg castle garden, which is full of sculptures and history

A paradise of sculptures and stories

Take a walk through Marselisborg's impressive castle garden, where you can not only enjoy the view of the large park, but also discover a wealth of sculptures located all around. The walk through the garden can almost feel like a journey into a fairy tale universe, with its small idyllic corners, the numerous sculptures, and the impressive white castle as a backdrop. Lake Åkande, with its ferryman ready to take the barge off, could unmistakably be a scene from one of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. The pergola, adorned with a large blue pot, invites imaginative storytelling, and the majestic granite lions in front of the castle look as if they could come to life at any moment.

Several of the sculptures you meet in the park were created by Prince Henrik, and some of them have adorned the garden for more than 50 years.

A world of sculptures

For most of the year, the castle garden is open to visitors. During the Royal Family's stay at the castle, the entrance is, however, guarded by the guards of the Royal Life Guard, and you must politely wait with your visit until the castle is open again.

Everything is open to visitors except near the kitchen garden and entrance to the castle. Here you have to be content with peeking over the hedge. Besides the many trees and bushes, the park is full of sculptures. The sculptures begin to appear even before you reach the castle, and at most of them you will find a sign informing you of the sculpture's donor and its year of origin.

Lake Åkande

Even for those who are not particularly interested in art, a visit to the castle garden is worth an experience. The sculptures, which certainly add to the area's charm, are impossible to overlook, but the park itself also offers a number of unique nature experiences. The park is divided into different areas, each with their own character. Close to the castle are the private vegetable gardens and flower beds, and a short distance away you will find Lake Åkande.

Surrounded by tall trees and a carpet of water lilies, the Ferryman stands as a central figure in the middle of the lake. This place invites you to reconnect with your inner sense of adventure. With its imaginative atmosphere, the place could easily inspire writers to write fairy tales with Lake Åkande as a backdrop.

In addition to Lake Åkande, the garden also offers a fruit grove and perhaps the park's most photographed element – ​​the huge blue pot placed in the middle of a pergola. The jar, which measures 5 meters in height and weighs 6 tonnes, only really impresses when you stand right next to it.

Behind the pergola you will find the rose garden, where over 300 rose bushes are arranged in neat circles. Many of these roses are of old and historically significant varieties. In the center of one of the circles stands a spire from Otto Mønsted's Margarine factory, which now functions as a charming little pavilion. Rosenhaven also offers benches where you can sit and enjoy the sight and smell of the flowers.
