Lighthouse

8000 Aarhus Ø

Aarhus' new landmark – from seabed to sky

Lighthouse is one of Aarhus' most striking landmarks. The 142,6-meter-high building rises at the tip of Aarhus O as Denmark's tallest building and contains architecture, storytelling, the sea, history and Northern Europe's fastest elevators.

The building was designed by 3XN Architects and combines housing, a restaurant, an experience center and a publicly accessible viewing platform. The facade is characterized by the undulating, white bands that wrap around the large glass sections and give the building its special expression.

Inside, Lighthouse contains 390 apartments, and some residents have purchased two or more units and combined them, so that some floors today form one large residence with 360-degree views of the city and the bay.

Architecture with a view

Lighthouse is built on a man-made peninsula at the far end of Aarhus Island. The foundation rests on hundreds of piles below sea level, and the entire structure is designed to withstand wind, water and the test of time. The building was created with the ambition of being a modern city icon and a place where residents, visitors and architecture enthusiasts alike meet.

On the ground floor you will find reception, a shop and access to the basement exhibition “The City & the Bay”. Here you can learn about the natural and urban space that Lighthouse is a part of. At the top of the building is Restaurant Bavn and Aarhus Øje, which is a viewing platform where everyone can experience Aarhus from a height of 142,6 meters.

A place where the city meets

Although Lighthouse is an exclusive residential building, the building is far from a closed tower. School classes, architecture students, retirement associations and tourists visit the house every day to experience the exhibition and the spectacular view from the top. In this way, Lighthouse is both a home and a public space. A building that connects the life of the city with the bay and the horizon.

Aarhus Øje with a view from the top

On the 42nd floor you will find Aarhus Eye, the public viewing platform where you can experience Aarhus from the city's highest point. Up here you get a panoramic view of the bay, the harbor and the city's landmarks. Along the glass wall people stand pointing, taking pictures, recognizing buildings and letting their gaze drift out to the horizon.

There is no time limit up here, you can stay as long as you want. Many people sit on one of the benches, the wind rustling their jackets, and enjoy the feeling of standing between sea and sky.

Good advice from the guide

If you want to get the full experience of Aarhus Øje, start in the basement. When you stand at the top, the history of the bay, the city and the development around Aarhus Ø will make much more sense. Give yourself plenty of time, the terrace has no time limit, and both sunset and cloudy weather can create a very special atmosphere.

And last but not least, keep an eye out for the ships in the harbor and the distinctive buildings you may have already seen in the basement movie room. It makes the view even more fun to decode.
