Coffee & Sensory – When the smell of coffee meets the sound of music

The foyer buzzes with coffee and conversations

It already starts in the foyer of Aarhus Congress Center.
The air is saturated with freshly ground beans, and the warm scent greets you as soon as the doors open. The stalls are close together. Here are coffee producers, roasters and small brands, all of whom have brought their best brews and stories. Coffee Collective, La Cabra, Europa Kaffe & Te, Komma Kaffe, Grums and many more are ready to tell you, let you taste and maybe send you home with a bag of their favorite beans.

People wander quietly between the stalls. Some sip an espresso, others balance two cups of coffee and a bag of freshly roasted beans. The atmosphere is light, warm and filled with small talk.

Kaffe & Sensorik is a festival where coffee, music and community come together. Local and international coffee producers, baristas, musicians and guests meet for two days filled with tasting experiences, talks, workshops and acoustic concerts. It is a festival that is about much more than coffee, it is about atmosphere, presence and curiosity.

Into the festival's main hall

Here the trade fair atmosphere disappears, and instead it feels like stepping into an indoor festival. In the middle of the room is the large stage where the music unfolds. Opposite are two smaller stages for talks and workshops, where people sit with headphones and immerse themselves in conversations about everything from brewing to sustainability.

Small lounge areas have been created along the sides. Chairs, sofas, dim lighting. People sit here with coffee, wine or a cocktail in hand. The conversation flows softly, while the tones from the stage mix with the scent of roasted coffee. There is a buzz all over the place. An atmosphere that you can't really plan for, it just happens.

Coffee needs to go down to the ground

“We want to bring coffee down to earth,” says Michael, one of the festival's two founders.
Last year, the festival was held on a smaller scale at Centralværkstedet, but this year is the first time it will fill the entire Aarhus Congress Center.

“We needed more space, not just for the audience, but to create a better flow. People should be able to move freely, talk to the exhibitors, immerse themselves in the talks and enjoy the music at the same time. Everything should be connected.”

He explains how the festival is largely built around Danish coffee culture, a culture where almost everyone has a relationship with coffee.
“Coffee is a bit like our national drink. Everyone drinks it, but many don't think much about it. That's why the festival is about making coffee something down to earth, something we can talk about at eye level. We don't want to be a nerdy barista bubble. We want everyone to be involved.”

That's also why talks and workshops are silent. Here people can immerse themselves while the music plays on the main stage, without the room being divided.
“We didn’t want small, closed spaces,” he explains. “This is one unified space where everything lives side by side.”

Coffee grounds, curiosity and community

At Grums' booth, they talk about how they collect coffee grounds from the festival to make skincare products.
“People here are curious, not snobbish,” says one of the founders with a laugh. “This is the best event we’ve ever been to.”

The music is just as important a part of the experience as the coffee. On Saturday, names like Anne Linnet, Outlandish and Aura Dione will take the stage, while Sunday features Katinka, Sys Bjerre and Mekdes. The acoustic concerts flow like a soft backdrop, and people drift in and out of the lounge, talks and coffee stalls without losing the feeling of being part of something together.

Outside, the food stalls are ready, and the conversation continues under the autumn sky.
Coffee & Sensorik is not a trade fair in the traditional sense. It is an experience that brings together everything that coffee can be: taste, conversation, music and community.
