GOODS Opening Reception Food

On Friday afternoon there were lots of smiles, clinking glasses and good energy at Godsbanen in Aarhus, when the new restaurant GOODS opened its doors. After a month of transformation, the place was ready to welcome guests, and from 14 p.m. the room was buzzing with life.

People moved around curiously to experience the new surroundings, while delicious snacks and colorful drinks were served. Atmospheric jazz music in the background added the finishing touch and made the atmosphere both relaxed and festive.

A new chapter with a focus on quality and community

During the opening, Mads Poulsen, one of the forces behind GODS, took to the stage and spoke honestly about the journey from the former Spiselauget to the new eatery:

“It was actually with a heavy heart that we closed Spiselauget – because that place really had a special history. But we could feel that it was time for a change. Now we have created GODS with a clear focus on quality, good Danish ingredients and, not least, good hospitality.”

He also emphasized how important it is to connect food and culture:

“Food and culture are intertwined – often a good evening starts with a glass of wine before experiencing an event or dinner afterwards. We want to support that here.”

Mads also explained how the winter months can be a challenge for the chefs, who have to think creatively to get the best out of seasonal ingredients. That's why they ferment and pickle a lot so that the good Danish ingredients can be used year-round.

And the prices? They are set so that everyone can join in: A cup of coffee for 15 kr., open sandwiches for 29 kr. and a bowl of soup for 21 kr.
It is part of the ambition to create a community kitchen where high-quality food is still affordable.

Food and art in interaction

The design of GODS is far from random – it is the result of a collaboration between artists, guests, staff and even the team’s own families. Marianne Grymer Bargeman, director of Godsbanen, spoke about how GODS has become an extension of the creative environment:

“We have brought the creativity of the open workshops right into the restaurant. The jar with forks and knives on the tables is handmade in one of the workshops, and the artwork on the walls is created by local artists.”

Marianne also emphasized GODS' sustainable approach:

“Sustainability has been the focus, and we have recycled everything we could. The tables are the same, and the lamps come from industry.”

The opening day clearly showed that GODS is already well on its way to becoming a gathering point for both local Aarhusians and visitors from outside. Here you can enjoy a good meal, experience art and culture or just meet over a cup of coffee in cozy surroundings.

Godsbanen – Aarhus' creative playground

GODS is located right in the middle of Godsbanen, a place buzzing with creativity and innovation. It used to be a freight station, but today it is one of Aarhus' most exciting cultural venues. Here you will find workshops, artistic work spaces, theaters, concert halls and small entrepreneurs who create everything from design to performing arts. It is raw, it is urban, and it is a place where new ideas are allowed to flourish.

With its combination of food, art and community, GODS fits perfectly into the environment. It is a place where you can take a break, enjoy a meal made with good Danish ingredients and at the same time feel the special atmosphere that makes Godsbanen something very special.
