Tivoli Friheden is one of Aarhus' greatest experiences all year round.
Tivoli Friheden has been a part of Aarhus for more than 100 years and is today much more than a classic amusement park. In the middle of the Marselisborg forests, concerts, rides, gastronomy and major seasonal events come together in one place, making the park a popular excursion destination for both Aarhusians and visitors.
Many still associate Friheden with summer holidays and roller coasters, but the park has developed significantly in recent years. Today, many people visit Tivoli Friheden as much for the Fat Friday concerts, the Flower Festival, Halloween in Friheden, Christmas in Friheden and the experiences in Hermans as for the classic rides. This also means that there are experiences to be had throughout most of the season.
Amusements for both children and adults
The rides are still the heart of Tivoli Friheden. Here you will find both quiet family rides, classic carousels and attractions that will get your heart pumping. This makes the park a place where several generations can have a good day together, regardless of whether the goal is speed and excitement or a cozy day in green surroundings.
The park is also easy to navigate. There are short distances between the rides, restaurants and green areas, making it easy to take breaks along the way. This is one of the reasons why many families with children return year after year.
Fat Friday has become an Aarhus summer tradition
When the calendar says summer, the anticipation for Fat Friday begins. The concert series has developed into a permanent tradition, where thousands of guests gather in front of the stage to experience some of Denmark's greatest artists and selected international names.
The new concert stage, which opened in 2022, has elevated the experience with better sound, better views and modern facilities. At the same time, the location in the middle of the park means that the concert can easily be combined with a trip to the rides or a dinner before the music starts.
Flower festival transforms the park every summer
Every summer, Tivoli Friheden takes on a whole new look during the Flower Festival. Thousands of flowers, creative installations and inspiring theme gardens spread throughout the park, creating an experience that is markedly different from the rest of the season.
The festival was developed in collaboration with, among others, garden expert Claus Dalby and attracts garden enthusiasts, photographers and families who want to experience the park from a completely different perspective. Many guests spend several hours walking around the flower installations and experiencing the many details.
Halloween and Christmas in Friheden have become established traditions
As autumn approaches, Tivoli Friheden changes character once again. Since 2007, Halloween in Friheden has developed into one of Denmark's largest Halloween experiences with activities for both children and adults. During the day, the atmosphere is cozy and family-friendly, while darkness brings more thrills, living figures and spooky experiences around the park.
From mid-November, Christmas in Freedom takes over. Thousands of Christmas lights, cozy stalls, Christmas decorations and the smell of mulled wine and warm Christmas specialties create an atmosphere that attracts guests from all over East Jutland every year. Many visit the park solely for the Christmas experiences, while others combine the visit with shopping, food or a family day.
Hermans turns Tivoli Friheden into a cultural center
Inside the park is Hermans, which hosts concerts, comedy, lectures, theater and shows all year round. This means that Tivoli Friheden also lives outside the high season and offers experiences when the rides are on break.
Hermans has been visited by both Danish and international artists over the years and has become an important part of Aarhus' cultural life. The combination of indoor events and the park's outdoor events makes Tivoli Friheden an experience place with activities across the seasons.
Food and breaks are part of the experience
A visit to Tivoli Friheden is not just about the rides. All around the park you will find cafés, restaurants and small eateries where you can take a break between experiences.
You can choose from a quick lunch to a dinner overlooking Swan Lake, and several restaurants focus on good ingredients and seasonal dishes, making it easy to spend a whole day in the park without having to leave the area.
That's why many return several times a year.
What's special about Tivoli Friheden is that the experience is never quite the same. The park changes with the seasons, the concert program changes from year to year, and new events continually give guests a reason to come back.
At Aarhus Inside we follow developments closely. We visit the concerts, experience the major seasonal events and continuously share guides, reports and news from Tivoli Friheden. That's why you will not only find practical information on this page, but also inspiration for your next visit, whether you are planning a family day, a concert with friends or a walk through the park's flowers, pumpkins or Christmas lights.
