Rachmaninov 2 – A romantic evening with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra
Dream away in Rachmaninov's soft tones, Shostakovich's playful piano and Tarp's musical excess. This concert is a warm welcome to classical music – even for those who don't normally go to the concert hall.
Aarhus Symphony Orchestra's Artist in Residence, Marianna Shirinyan, takes her place at the piano in Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto – a lovingly composed gift for the composer's son and a rare glimmer of light in Shostakovich's otherwise dark universe. It is playful, light and full of energy – and Shirinyan is made for the task.
The concert begins with Tarp's Lystspilsoverture, which with its bubbling mood and romantic melodies sets the stage for an evening of music.
We then delve into Sergei Rachmaninoff's magnificent Symphony No. 2. The music embraces melancholy, hope and romance with a sound that is both welcoming and overwhelmingly beautiful. For those new to the classical world, it is hard to find a better introduction.
