Pleasure Travel in the 1800th Century – The Birth of Tourism in Denmark
Have you ever wondered when we Danes started traveling just for the sake of the experience? On March 12, Den Gamle By invites you to a fascinating lecture at the Helsingør Theater, where historian Mikael Frausing will take you back to the 1800th century. It was here that the first “pleasure travelers” set out into the Danish countryside with hats and walking sticks to visit icons such as Møns Klint and Himmelbjerget.
The lecture is a unique opportunity for those interested in cultural heritage and Danish history. You will gain insight into how tourism was not only a golden business for some, but also a source of irritation for others – a debate that is still relevant today. Mikael Frausing, author of the book Turistlandet, unfolds the story of how early forms of holiday have helped shape the image we have of Denmark as a nation.
An experience in a historical setting
The atmospheric Helsingør Theater provides the perfect backdrop for an evening of history. The event is part of the 2026 Festival of the Century, and you will discover how past forms of travel can teach us something about our own holiday habits in a time of focus on both authenticity and climate.
Whether you are a local Aarhusian or a visitor, you will leave the lecture with a deeper understanding of why we travel at all and what it is we seek when we go out into the world.
