Cathedral Conversation: Are we entering the golden age of stupidity?

Perhaps we are not getting any smarter from massive education. On the contrary, there is much evidence that we as a society are moving towards a new golden age of stupidity and idiocy. Aarhus Cathedral provides the setting for a thought-provoking conversation that dares to ask the questions we normally avoid.

“I am stupid. So are you.” This is how Norwegian philosopher Lars Fr. H. Svendsen begins his latest book, and it is precisely this brutally honest premise that forms the starting point for today’s Cathedral Conversation. In an era characterized by social media echo chambers, fear of artificial intelligence and political follies, we ask: What exactly is stupidity?

The conversation addresses what characterizes the stupid person, and what it means for our society when we behave like idiots. Philosopher Lars Fr. H. Svendsen gives us a key to understanding our time, while parish priest Henrik Grøndal Lund draws threads back to the Bible and Christianity's own accounts of the stupid idiots.

If we want to avoid becoming “useful idiots” in an increasingly complex world, it is crucial that we learn to recognize stupidity and regain the ability to think for ourselves. Come and have your ideas about intelligence and education shaken under the dome of the cathedral.

The conversation takes place in an easy-to-understand mixture of Norwegian and Danish.
