The Peace Light in Our Lady's Church
A special service in the city's oldest church room
Vor Frue Kirke and St. Georgs Gilderne in Aarhus resume a beautiful tradition when this year's Peace Candle is lit at a special service. An evening where both history, hope and community are allowed to fill the church space.
The peace candle service begins in the crypt church, which is the city's oldest church room. Here the light is lit and everyone who brings a cemetery candle, a bat lantern or another suitable light can take a flame home. A small spark that symbolizes peace, courage and hope in the midst of the winter darkness.
The Peace Light began in 1986, when a flame is brought from the Nativity Grotto in Bethlehem every year. Since then, the tradition has grown and the flame now travels across Europe, carried by scouts and communities. Ukrainian scouts bring the light all the way to the front line, and German scouts bring it to Denmark, where it is kept burning in the Catholic Church in Ryesgade before being distributed throughout the country. This year's message is A spark of courage for a life in peace.
In addition to the service in Our Lady's Church, the Peace Light is also included in a number of other Advent services in Aarhus, including a festive service in Langenæs Church on the 1st Sunday in Advent where you can also light your own candle.
