Drew McDowall on Phono
Drew McDowall on Phono
Experience one of the true icons of experimental music in an intimate setting
Are you ready to step into a universe where reality is distorted and transformed into something completely different? On Friday, May 8, 2026, Phono will be visited by Scottish artist Drew McDowall, who has refused to conform to the norms of the music industry for decades. His meditative compositions are both haunting and spiritual, where intricate modular sound surfaces merge with deconstructed samples.
Drew McDowall's story reads like a surreal novel. He grew up in the Scottish gang scene of the 1970s, but found refuge in the rich underground music of punk and Glasgow. He later became a central figure in the British avant-garde, working with names like Genesis P-Orridge and David Tibet. As a full member of the legendary cult band Coil, he helped shape a sound where music functioned as a psychoactive tool and a magical practice.
Although McDowall has a strong affinity for electronic music, he never lets himself be limited by genre. In his more recent works, he draws on everything from strings and brass to church organ and harp to create soundscapes that evoke both horror, tender melancholy and glimpses of heavenly beauty. This will undoubtedly be one of the most intense listening experiences in Mejlgade this year.
