100 years at Frederiksbjerg: Here is your guide to the anniversary celebration in St. Luke's Church
You probably know the striking tower at the end of Ingerslevs Boulevard, but have you ever been completely inside behind the heavy doors?. On the occasion of St. Luke's Church's 100th anniversary in 2026, the church room is transformed into a modern cultural festival, and you are invited to everything from hip-hop talk to free knitting fun.
Here is an overview of what you can experience
See the church built from 18.000 LEGO bricks
Monday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. you can experience something completely unique. Thomas Birk Sørensen has used 18.000 bricks to recreate St. Luke's Church in an impressive 130 cm model. There will be a vernissage in the porch, where you can study the details closely over a bun and a cup of cocoa.
Free breakfast and “knitting guerrilla”
If you need a quiet start to the day, stop by the parish house on Tuesday, March 10th from 10:00-12:00. Nora from the parish council will be serving free breakfast and coffee. Bring your knitting and help make flag garlands for the church, or just enjoy the company.
Get to the top of the open tower
It's not every day that you get to go up one of the city's most iconic towers. During the anniversary week, the church is holding an "Open Tower" where you can enjoy the view over Frederiksbjerg.
You can get there at the following times:
- Monday, March 9: 5:30–7:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, March 10: 3:00 PM–5:00 PM (AGF) and 7:30 PM–8:30 PM.
- Wednesday, March 11: 6:00 PM–7:30 PM.
Rappers' Book Club and cheap communal dining
On Wednesday, March 11th at 7:30 PM, culture will really kick in when “Rappernes Bogklub” visits the church. Before then (Tuesday, March 10th at 5:30 PM), you can join us for a communal meal, which is the perfect way to meet your neighbors in Frederiksbjerg.
A different break: “Signs of life”
Do you need to unplug from the hustle and bustle of everyday life? On Monday, March 9th at 7:30 PM, you can participate in a different kind of church service with a focus on peace and presence. Here, there is space to listen, be quiet, and let your thoughts take shape as lines or words on paper. It is completely free and requires no registration.
Market Day Concert: Music from Notre Dame
On Saturday, March 7th at 12:00, you can combine your trip to Ingerslev Boulevard market with a free concert experience in the church hall. As part of the Festival of the Century, you can hear Vibeke Astner play music by Louis Vierne, who was the organist at Notre Dame in Paris. It is free and open to everyone.
100 years of life in the church
Behind the thick walls lie stories that are anything but solemn. Did you know, for example, that the church choir has been singing along since its inauguration in 1926? At the time, it consisted of just five singers, but in the 1950s it grew to an impressive boys' and men's choir of 25.
The young choirboys were paid a princely salary of 3 DKK per Sunday, but they were also known for bringing a lot of trouble into the church. The story goes that they secretly threw stink bombs, balanced on stair railings and even sent roller skates hurtling down the concrete stairs when the organist looked away. It is precisely this spirit of life, community and a bit of “playfulness” that you can experience in the tightly packed anniversary program, where there is still room for both the profound and the funny.
